Trace kept hold of Shay’s moist palm as they entered the bar. Ari trailed behind them still insistent that Trace say something. The bar was empty except for a small group of folks sitting around a table near the entrance. The new bartender was a local lioness from the pride, Niagra.
She nodded as she wiped down the surface.
They stalked down the hall toward El’s office. The door flew off the hinges and Trace shoved Shay behind him. His claws erupted from his fingers. Gunter’s calm tone was drowned out by the crash of a laptop hitting the adjacent wall. It shattered and the pieces rained down on the floor. Trace glanced over his shoulder at Ari, who shrugged. He met Shay’s gaze and dipped his head. She nodded in understanding. She would wait there.
“I want that bitch here fucking now!” El yelled from beyond the doorway.
Trace extended his head over the threshold. The room was littered with loose papers and broken furniture.
Nae was standing on the love seat with her hand wrapped around the neck of an aluminum baseball bat. Framed pictures were on the floor surrounded by shattered glass.
El’s desk was rammed against the far wall and the office chair was upturned. The leather in the club chair was shredded to reveal the torn white padding. He looked over at El. His face was a ruddy red and his nose flared with every breath he took. El had lost it. His claws were clearly visible and a thick gold mane flowed over his shoulders.
“Calm the fuck down.” Gunter shook his head.
“Baby, if one more item comes flying my way I will beat you over the head with this bat,” Nae yelled.
Shay breezed by him and into the chaos. “What the hell happened here?”
Trace hustled behind her, gripping her shoulder to pull her out before El made a full shift into his beast. Never mind what he thought earlier, Shay could very well be the death of him. She had no sense of danger. The worry that swelled up with in him slowly abated.
“Reminds you of home, doesn’t it?” Nae jumped off the cushions and rested the bat on the floor.
“Yeah.” Shay turned toward her. “What’s up with big and bad?” She eased free of Trace’s grasp and nodded toward El.
“Money’s missing from some accounts.” Nae sighed. “He’s a little peeved.”
Shay bobbed her head. “Understandable. That’s an important commodity. But did he have to throw out a laptop. That move broke my heart. I mean, what did the device ever do to him?”
“Your love of machines is unhealthy,” Nae muttered as she ambled toward El. She leaned in and kissed his shoulder.
“Ari, pick up La from the house and find Zima.”
Gunter looked around the room. “It could just be a computer glitch. As much as I hate to say this, let’s hear Zima out first.”
Ari slipped from the room his only acknowledgement of the order.
Trace blew out a breath and met El’s gaze.
“Three quarters of a million dollars is a lot to lose.
